Studio Ceramics 2024 - Review of the year And.. Looking forward to 2025

2024 was a bumper year for studio ceramics sales at Adam Partridge Auctioneers & Valuers. In our first auction in January, we were pleased to offer a large and diverse range of work reflecting much of the collecting life of Michael Evans, a.k.a Dayabandhu. Our spring auction, with over 650 lots, also had plenty for collectors and enthusiasts to choose from, the star lot being a vessel by John Ward selling for a remarkable hammer price of £18,500.

Over 700 lots were offered in our summer auction. Again, topping the bill were a group of six works by John Ward, including two eye-catching black-and-white vessels (top price £11,000). A large vessel by Ewen Henderson sold for £4,250, while other strong results were achieved for a Sara Flynn vessel (£1,900), a Walter Keeler Whieldon-glazed teapot (£1,650), and a Joanna Constantinidis bottle (£1,500).

Highlights from our autumn auction of 780 lots included a set of six cups and saucers by Lucie Rie dating from the late 1950s (£6,800), and from the same era a Lucie Rie milk jug (£1,550). Also on offer were a group of sculptural pieces by Vanessa Hogge (top price £2,400), a vessel by Paul Philp (£1,350), a monumental bottle by Richard Batterham (£1,800), and a selection of works by Simon Carroll (top price £880). In terms of other craft, the standout result was for a three-dimensional macrogauze by Peter Collingwood made circa 1970 (£8,000).

STUDIO CERAMICS 2025

Three studio ceramics sales are currently scheduled for 2025. Our spring auction in March will feature a rare selection of works by William Staite Murray from the estate of Reginald Marlow, one of Staite Murray’s earliest pupils, as well as pieces by Shoji Hamada from the same estate. Other highlights to be offered include a counterpoint jar by Elizabeth Fritsch dating to 1975, a black-and-white shouldered pot by John Ward, and more works by Lucie Rie. The March sale is open for consignments until 10th February.
